A U.S. player is set to leave European soccer, according to recent reports, and several MLS teams have been mentioned as a possible new destination.

Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath is set to leave Sheffield Wednesday, as SBI Soccer reports that the English club will not extend his loan. The Colorado native is under contract with Cardiff City until Jan. 2, 2026, according to Transfermarkt.

Therefore, Horvath, 30, will become a free agent, and according to the cited report, his future could be in Major League Soccer.

Among the clubs mentioned as a possible destination, LA Galaxy and Red Bull New York stand out, but they also mention Orlando City and Minnesota United, as all these clubs are looking to sign a goalkeeper before the 2026 MLS season.

"Ethan Horvath’s time with Sheffield Wednesday is coming to an end with the veteran goalkeeper leaning towards MLS for the next chapter of his career," SBI Soccer explained.

"Multiple MLS clubs are seeking new starting goalkeepers this winter, including the New York Red Bulls, LA Galaxy, Orlando City, and Minnesota United. Horvath has expressed interest in moving to MLS after playing the majority of his professional career abroad in Europe, sources confirmed," they added.

USA Soccer's Ethan Horvath Could Move to MLS After a Long Career in Europe

Horvath began his career in Europe with Norway's Molde FK after leaving Real Colorado in 2013. In 2017, he made the jump to Belgium's Club Brugge, becoming an important piece for the club in different periods.

In the summer of 2021, he was signed as a free agent by Nottingham Forest, although he was unable to establish himself as a starter. Just a year later, he was loaned to Luton Town, where he stayed for a year. He was finally signed by Cardiff in 2024, but in the summer of the following year, he went on loan to Sheffield Wednesday.

The first time Horvath was called up by the USMNT for an official tournament was on May 21, 2016, when he was included in the official player list to compete in the Copa America Centenario in the United States.

Since then, he has had sporadic call-ups, such as in 2021 when he participated in the Concacaf Nations League finals. He also went to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, although he did not play, serving only as backup to Matt Turner.
