USMNT star who rejected Mexico call-up misses out on Mauricio Pochettino’s World Cup squad

Diego Luna has reportedly been left out of Mauricio Pochettino’s 26-man United States squad for the 2026 World Cup, a harsh call given the Real Salt Lake attacker’s recent rise with the national team.

The official U.S. Soccer roster announcement is set for 26 May, but reports suggest Luna has already been told he will not be included.

That is significant because Luna chose the USMNT over Mexico, then went on to become one of the standout players at the 2025 Gold Cup. His omission now highlights just how ruthless Pochettino’s final selection process has been.

Luna’s international choice adds weight to his omission

Luna’s story goes beyond club form. It comes with real international context, as he could have chosen a different path.

Born in Sunnyvale, California, the 22-year-old has Mexican heritage and was approached by Mexico before committing to the USMNT.

He made it clear that his decision was personal, not just professional. Luna said he respects and loves Mexico, but grew up in the United States and felt connected to the country and its team.

That context matters now. This was not a decision of convenience. It was one based on identity and upbringing.

That makes his reported World Cup omission feel even harsher. Luna committed to the USMNT, delivered in a major tournament, and still appears to have just missed out on Pochettino’s final squad.

Pochettino’s approach leaves no room for sentiment

The case for Luna was strong. He produced three goals and two assists at the 2025 Gold Cup, including a semi-final brace against Guatemala as the USMNT reached the final.

Luna has continued to impress at club level too. MLS reported he reached a major milestone with Real Salt Lake in 2026, and his form was not just built on past performances.

But Pochettino has always framed this World Cup squad as about finding the right 26, not simply the most talented 26.

This decision fits that message. Luna’s omission may be brutal, but it is not surprising for those who have followed Pochettino’s approach.

Pochettino has been clear that nobody’s place was guaranteed. Luna is now the clearest example of that policy in action.

Luna’s omission is a reflection of Pochettino’s process

This should not be seen as a judgement on Luna’s ability, nor as evidence that he made the wrong international choice.

Luna’s rise with the USMNT has still been impressive, and his Gold Cup impact was real. His progress with Real Salt Lake has continued.

What has changed is the level of competition. Pochettino appears to be building his final squad around role fit, balance, trust, and tournament readiness.

It is a tough outcome for Luna, especially as he had momentum behind him. But it is also consistent with how Pochettino said he would approach selection.

Luna may still have a significant future with the USMNT. But for this World Cup, his reported omission is a sign of just how far Pochettino is willing to go to shape the squad in his own way.
