US men's soccer national team star Tyler Adams was injured in the recent 4-4 draw between AFC Bournemouth and Manchester United in the Premier League earlier this week.
Adams, 26, blocked a shot from Matheus Cunha in the third minute of the match, and the American midfielder went down holding his knee, leading to his substitution just five minutes into the game.
Head coach Andoni Iraola confirmed the extent of the blow suffered by Adams, revealing it is an MCL injury.
“Tyler is injured and has torn his MCL, so he will definitely be out for some time," Iraola said. "From our previous experience with MCL injuries, it is normally around two or three months. If you are optimistic, it’s going to be two. If you are pessimistic, it’s going to be three."
USMNT co-captain Adams has already reacted to this disheartening news, doing so through his official Instagram account.
The midfielder posted a picture of himself, adding the following description: "Part of the journey, see y’all soon."
While it is true he will most likely be ready for the coming 2026 FIFA World Cup, it is also normal for USMNT fans to be worried.
If the prognosis holds, Adams could return around February, which would mean he only plays in two friendlies with Team USA before the World Cup.
The USMNT has a pair of matches scheduled in March, which is when the midfielder could make his return to the national team. The U.S. will take on Belgium on March 28, 2026, and Portugal on March 31, 2026.
