Liverpool demonstrated their impressive squad depth with a commanding victory over LOSC Lille, taking control of the match right from the start. With a busy fixture list ahead, the Reds opted to rest several key players for their midweek Champions League encounter.

Even with the changes, Virgil van Dijk kept his spot in the starting lineup, as he typically does in Europe’s top competition. However, instead of his usual partner Ibrahima Konaté, Van Dijk was paired with young Jarell Quansah, who was making his debut start in the Champions League.

The youngster has not had much playing time under Arne, with most of his opportunities limited to domestic cup competitions. Quansah’s time under Arne Slot has been limited compared to his larger role under Jürgen Klopp, during which he made 33 appearances… a tally unlikely to be surpassed this season.

Despite his reduced role as a squad player, Virgil van Dijk remains confident that Quansah is progressing well and firmly on the right path at Liverpool.

Quansah poised to step up for a larger role

Quansah, the Liverpool academy graduate who has been with the club his entire life, has made just 45 appearances for the Reds, contributing to six goals. While last season went smoothly for the young centre-back, facing adversity was inevitable as part of his development.

Judging by his performance against Lille, Quansah appears to have come through those challenges stronger, which will serve him well moving forward.

With Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konaté not reaching their desired fitness, Slot will have to count on the youngster more often this season. The 21-year-old has his best days ahead of him due to the opportunity provided, and teaming up with VVD will help him not just elevate his game but also get influenced by the solid mentality, the captain provides.

Van Dijk expressed high praise for Quansah following his performance against Lille, emphasizing the young defender’s potential. The captain emphasised the importance of learning and building confidence essential traits for a young defender.

The captain had praises for the youngster after the Lille game, speaking to the pressers via The Athletic

“It’s a season where Jarell can learn each and every day,” “He’s a fantastic young player and can only get better.

“He’s in a great place to learn and when he gets the opportunity to play, like tonight, he just has to show his qualities and play with confidence. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, because we all make mistakes. He did well.”

The best is yet to come for Jarell Quansah, and having Virgil van Dijk alongside him will undoubtedly help him reach new heights. To secure a breakthrough in Liverpool’s first team, the youngster must make the most of every opportunity he’s given.
