WAFU Opinion: Four realistic transfers to kickstart rebuild at Old Trafford
PA Images/Alamy Images

With the last season ending on a downward note given the loss against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League complemented by inconsistent Premier League form that saw the gaps within this Manchester United side exposed, a few things became apparently obvious, and one of those is the fact that the Manchester Reds need a rebuild, not a patchwork. But that being said, rebuilding is not always about bringing in marquee players; at times it is about bringing in players that fit the tactical system complemented by the available budget and the long-term vision that the board shares.

But who should United bring in realistically this summer? This is one of the many debates that many Utd supporters are talking about lately, and we take a look at four sensible and realistic targets that can take this roster a long way under Ruben Amorim:

4 realistic transfers that Amorim can make at Manchester United

Matheus Cunha (Wolves)

The Wolves forward has been linked with a marquee transfer to Old Trafford for a while. He does bring something that the current roster lacks on the offensive side of things: someone that connects the midfield to the front line. He is mobile and really smart with his movements and apt at receiving the ball deeply and driving at the backline.

Cunha is also a very versatile profile given how he can play in the number nine position in a flexible 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or drop deeper in a 3-4-2-1 under Amorim.

He can complement Hojlund if United keep hold of the former Atalanta star. The Brazil international also knows how to create space for the likes of Bruno by dragging his markers out of space, and given his pressing skills, he can seamlessly fit into the system that the Portuguese head coach has deployed at M16.

Liam Delap (Ipswich City)

Going from a low centre of gravity striker to more of a poacher, Delap might not be a marquee signing, but he has the potential to lead the front line given his physical frame and back-to-the-goal abilities. And given his antics at Ipswich Town this season, he is definitely ready to step into a bigger role.

But given his history on the other side of the town with Manchester City, it is to be seen if he fancies moving to Old Trafford amid extensive links with a move to M16 of late.

We saw how Amorim coached Gyokeres into an elite striker at Sporting Lisbon, and Delap could follow a similar trajectory given his potential if he does end up moving to United.

Mike Maignan (AC Milan)

Onana is extensively seen as a weak link in this United side by many, and given the mistakes he has been making along the season, it could just be that Amorim goes on to replace the Ajax academy graduate this summer. The current roster needs someone who has that elite shot-stopping ability complemented by calm distribution and leadership. If we look at the current market in terms of goalkeepers, then Maignan is arguably the most obtainable goalkeeper in Europe right now who has that composure and command of his box that Onana lacks.

He is excellent with the ball at his feet and brings that authority in terms of setting up his defensive line. With Mike you also get some sort of stability when it comes to crosses and set pieces (something where Onana has also been sketchy).

Ederson (Atalanta)

There is a huge need in the midfield given how many teams walked through the second phase against United this season, and this is where Ederson comes in. He is possibly one of the most underrated defensive midfielders in European football, given how he has been anchoring the aggressive pressing style at Atalanta. But he is more than that; he has the capacity to read transitions and stop that attack before it goes into spaces or zones that could directly affect the goal. He also likes to play channel passes to bypass presses.

You can put him in a three-man midfield alongside Ugarte at Old Trafford. Having Ederson also means that it allows Bruno to stay higher and receive in spaces that unlock vertical passing lanes.

I don’t think that the rebuild this window should be about United going and signing the biggest names in the market, but it should be more focused towards bringing in a bunch of players that fit the system and clear the problems in the current side, and the above four could do a lot for the roster.
