The solo icon and former frontman of The Smiths performed Munich Air Disaster 1958 over the weekend, as he took to the stage in front of a Las Vegas audience.

The song refers to the Munich Air Disaster, a plane crash involving Sir Matt Busby’s Manchester United squad in 1958, in which there were 23 fatalities. Eight of those were United players and three members of club staff.

February 6, 1958, is a day that will be forever remembered in the hearts of every United supporter. It was a day that a team died and a club was born.

The players whose lives were lost in the horrific crash were Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Coleman, Duncan Edwards, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Liam ‘Billy’ Whelan.
