The Manchester United legend has delivered a candid assessment of the Premier League race as Arsenal open up a six-point lead.

Wayne Rooney has confessed that this season’s title battle has been particularly difficult for him to follow, with Arsenal once again at the centre of the Premier League spotlight. As a lifelong Manchester United icon, seeing their historic rivals competing at the top has become an increasingly familiar frustration.

Despite that, Rooney has been impressed by Arsenal’s performances this campaign, with Mikel Arteta’s side currently six points clear of Manchester City at the summit. After years of watching City and Liverpool dominate the league, he even admits that part of him wants the Gunners to finally lift the trophy — though he remains cautious about what lies ahead.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney suggested that the championship race is effectively between Arsenal and Manchester City. While he believes Arsenal have the edge, he warned that Pep Guardiola’s side are specialists at chasing down leaders, making the closing months of the season extremely unpredictable.

Rooney acknowledged that it is particularly uncomfortable for him to imagine City applying pressure once again, but he expects them to be firmly in contention until the final weeks. He added that any slip from Arsenal could invite City to seize control of the race, reinforcing how unforgiving the margin for error remains at the top.

Why April’s clash could shape the title outcome

Although Arsenal hold the advantage, the Premier League’s volatility means the picture could change rapidly before the two rivals meet on April 18 at the Etihad Stadium — just five matchdays from the end of the campaign. That encounter could prove decisive, though it may also lose some of its weight if Arsenal extend their lead beforehand.

City’s upcoming schedule presents a major challenge, with away fixtures against Manchester United, Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea all looming before Arsenal’s visit. In contrast, the Gunners’ only Big Six away match in that stretch is a trip to Spurs. The balance of difficulty appears to favour Arteta’s side, making consistency in the coming weeks crucial as the title race intensifies.
