The glory days at Old Trafford feel a long time ago, with Manchester United experiencing on and off-field turmoil in recent seasons. Optimism was increased when Ruben Amorim arrived, but results haven’t significantly improved, which has left many wondering what the future holds for the Red Devils. Club legend Wayne Rooney is the latest to speak out, revealing his lack of faith that the situation will improve.
Amorim built a fearsome reputation in Portugal, steering Sporting CP to a plethora of trophies. Since arriving at Old Trafford, the Portuguese coach has failed to significantly improve things on the red half of Manchester.
When looking at the stats, Amorim has underwhelmed, collecting only 34 points from his 33 Premier League games in charge. The 3-1 defeat at Brentford on September 27 banished any positive thoughts from the team’s 2-1 win at home to Chelsea the week before.
Rooney’s legacy at Old Trafford is secure as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, and he is downbeat regarding the current situation at the club, making it clear he has no faith that the situation will improve.
“I just don’t know what’s going on,” Rooney said.
“I have tried my hand in management and it didn’t work out too well, so I get it. Ruben Amorim is my age, he’s still a young manager and I’m sure he’s got a massive future, but what’s going on at Man Utd, this is not Man Utd.
“I honestly hope he can turn it round and he does. But…after everything I’ve seen, honestly, I’ve got no faith in it.”
The situation is bleak at Old Trafford, and it appears a return to the glory days under Sir Alex Ferguson are a long way away. The club have quite frankly brought appalling performances in recent years, and the performances on the pitch are reflecting that. It feels like a reset is needed.
Amorim is under pressure, and there is no sugar coating that. Results need to improve, but it feels like this will take a significant amount of time. Can the Old Trafford board wait that long? Is Amorim the right man for the Old Trafford hotseat?
It feels like there are more questions than answers at the moment.
