Manchester United are starting to rally the troops following the sacking of Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim.

The former Sporting CP boss survived 14 months at Old Trafford before his stubbornness to his system, tension with Jason Wilcox and inconsistent results saw him get the boot.

Now, United are on the brink of announcing Michael Carrick as their new caretaker manager, with him and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being the front-runners.

Alongside them, fellow former United star and current under-18s manager, Darren Fletcher, held the fort until a short-term appointment was made.

However, they aren’t the only former Manchester United players to offer help in their time of need.

Ruud van Nistelrooy was also reportedly approached about a return to the hotseat, with Wayne Rooney stepping up now as well.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, United’s all-time top goalscorer commented that it would be a “no-brainer” to work under Michael Carrick.

Discussing the situation, Rooney commented: “Whether Michael [Carrick] goes in or if that’s Fletch [Darren Fletcher] or John O’Shea or myself, it needs people who know the football club.”

He continued: “Roy Keane – I know Roy has had his opinions, I said about Roy going in earlier in the season.

“Having people who know the club, who care for the club and understand what it takes to be a Manchester United player – that’s where the club needs to be.

“The club has lost its identity, it’s lost that family feel, if you like.

“Whether it’s Ole [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer] or Michael, this is an opportunity to bring that back, bring the spirit of Manchester United back to the football club.”

Rooney was then asked about joining Carrick’s backroom staff, to which the former striker commented: “Of course I would. It’s a no-brainer.

“I’m not begging a job here by the way. Just so everyone knows, if I was asked to go in of course I would. Appointing the manager is the most important thing.”
