Ruben Amorim is keen to restore the faith at Manchester United

Manchester United will face yet another crucial week, as there is huge pressure on the manager, Ruben Amorim. The 40-year-old is constantly facing questions about his position at the club after his side’s poor start to the 2025/26 season. The upcoming Premier League match against Sunderland will offer no respite to Amorim, as he has to convince the frustrated supporters. The 40-year-old will not be able to prove it with just words, as his team needs to show that on the field.

Ahead of the game, Ruben Amorim looked defiant but was realistic with his answers. He did concede that he and his team will not stop getting the criticisms unless they get back to positive results on the field. The 40-year-old stated that they have to start their progress in the points table with the upcoming game against Sunderland. Amorim did agree that his team made mistakes in the opening stretch of matches, but none of them were due to his system, formation and structure. The Portuguese manager feels that he has to prepare the players with conviction and believes that there are already subtle differences in the way they played last season, but that they are not getting reflected in the results.

“It is not the time to say, it is time to show. I can look at the games this season, for me they are completely DIFFERENT. there are some things the same, some different. There are other things we cannot change. In the other games, we are not the same team in some details. I have nothing to say at this moment. My job is to prepare the team.”

Fans have frustration with faint optimism

It is easy to understand why the fans are frustrated. The team are 14th in the points table leading up to the game against Sunderland, and has already lost three out of the six games so far. Moreover, Grimbsby Town have already knocked them out of the Carabao Cup, and that defeat should still sting for the fans. The matches like the 3-1 loss against Brentford sound alarm bells for Ruben Amorim, and this is why former players like Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville have called for his departure.

Yet optimism has not disappeared entirely. Amorim has only begun implementing his ideas, and his philosophy requires time. He aims to build around young players, laying foundations for sustained improvement despite restrictions tied to Financial Fair Play. His 3-4-3 setup emphasises pressing and structured movement, and if the players fully absorb it, the side could gain the intensity they currently lack.

Upcoming fixtures will be decisive. Sunderland arrive in confident form, with their manager openly acknowledging the test that awaits at Old Trafford. For Amorim, this game is about delivering a response that can buy him breathing space. With further challenges against Liverpool, Brighton, and Tottenham ahead, victory could lift confidence in a squad still searching for rhythm.

As debate continues over whether United should persist or consider alternatives, especially with reports that Manchester United are pondering the cost of replacing Ruben Amorim. So, the manager knows only results will quiet the noise. For now, supporters wait, anxious yet hopeful, that Sunderland’s visit might mark the beginning of a much-needed revival.
