Manchester United have recalled Toby Collyer from his loan spell at West Bromwich Albion, bringing an early end to a move that was originally designed to give the midfielder sustained Championship exposure.

Collyer joined West Brom on a season-long loan during the summer window, with United keen for the 21-year-old to accumulate regular senior minutes and accelerate his physical and tactical development away from Old Trafford.

In total, Collyer made 12 appearances in all competitions for the Baggies, featuring largely as a rotational option but earning a brief run in the starting 11 before injury interrupted his momentum.

He registered one assist, notably setting up a goal in West Brom’s 2–1 win over Preston North End, and showed flashes of the ball-carrying ability and composure that had previously put him on United’s first-team radar.

However, the loan was disrupted by a significant injury, which forced Collyer off early in one of his rare starts and ultimately led to him returning to Carrington for further assessment and rehabilitation under United’s medical team.

With the injury expected to keep him sidelined for a period, United opted to recall the midfielder rather than leave his recovery overseen externally, ensuring continuity in his treatment and long-term planning.

West Brom confirmed his departure in an official statement on their website, thanking Collyer for his contribution during his time at The Hawthorns and wishing him the best for the next stage of his career.

From United’s perspective, the recall does not alter their belief in the player’s potential, with Collyer still viewed as a long-term midfield project capable of fitting into future first-team plans once fully fit.

The club are expected to reassess his situation later in the season, with options including reintegration into under-21 and first-team training or another carefully selected loan once he returns to match sharpness.

For now, the priority is recovery and stability, with United determined that Collyer’s development remains on track despite a loan spell that ultimately fell short of its intended rhythm.
