Manchester United ended their season with a 1-0 loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
By the tail end of the campaign, it was clear United’s domestic season was already over in terms of meaningful goals.

Ruben Amorim made the Europa League his priority, even if it meant resting starters in the league and giving more playing time to academy young players.
In the end, Brennan Johnson’s strike gave Spurs the trophy – and left United with nothing to show for their efforts.
Amorim, though, stayed in his post, while Ange Postecoglou was the one who ended up out of a job.
The Europa League final was the first European decider for both managers.
In a new documentary titled ‘Winners’, Postecoglou’s team talk has now been made public.
“Remember why we do this. It’s not just about winning things. It’s about paying back. Giving to people who love us and make sacrifices for us,” Postecoglou said.
“So you walk out today, not just 11 brothers. Walk out today with all of us with you, with all those people with you.
“The thousands in the stadium with you, hundreds of thousands back home with you. We’re the biggest army. They can’t stop us…they can’t stop us. What we have can’t be stopped.
“Just go out there, play our football, be like a family. At the end of the game, when he’s lifting that trophy, you’re going to make all those people prouder than they have ever been in their lifetimes.”
Spurs may have been the team celebrating in Bilbao, but it’s Amorim preparing for another season at United while Postecoglou looks for his next role.
Even though he was still new to the job, Amorim got his side to a major final. And although the result didn’t go their way, the game’s stats show his players failed to back up the plan.
The numbers paint a telling picture. United controlled most of the match but conceded to the only shot Tottenham had on target – which came from a moment of bad luck.
Amorim had stressed the need for ruthlessness before the final, but his side couldn’t find the finishing touch.
Now, with a summer to strengthen the squad, the manager will be hoping to add the firepower needed to turn performances like this into silverware next time.
