Even though it may not seem like it, soccer is a contact sport that can result in cuts or other injuries for players.
For example, in South America, Marcelo, a former star and legend of Real Madrid CF, seriously injured Luciano Sánchez, defender of Argentinos Juniors, during a Copa Libertadores match.
The action caused a complete dislocation of Sánchez’s left knee, considered one of the most serious recent injuries in South American soccer.
Another recent injury occurred to Morgan Gibbs-White, a player for Nottingham Forest FC, leaving him with a pretty disturbing scar that runs from between the eyebrows to above the eyebrow.
The England international suffered a serious facial injury following a clash of heads with Robert Sanchez during Forest's 3-1 win over Chelsea on Monday.
The play occurred in the 60th minute of the match between Nottingham Forest FC and Chelsea FC, when the visiting side sent a long ball towards Gibbs-White, leaving him in a good position to shoot if he controlled the ball well.
However, fate had something else planned for the player. He let the ball bounce, and the Spanish goalkeeper came out to chase that ball, without knowing that he would also crash into the opposing player.
As of today, the club has not announced an official recovery time, since the severity of the wounds is being evaluated the scar can heal.
As a result of the facial injury, Gibbs-White missed the UEFA Europa League semifinal against Aston Villa FC and potentially the final.
Moreover, his chances of participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup are now at risk.
While his spot on the squad was never guaranteed, this unfortunate incident may have cost him the opportunity to compete for a place on the team.
