What Man Utd did vs West Ham last season that Ruben Amorim now wants to change

Ruben Amorim will be hoping to see a much better showing from Manchester United when they take on West Ham this season.

The Hammers came away from Old Trafford with a 2-0 win near the end of the 2024/25 campaign, extending Amorim’s winless run in the Premier League to seven matches at that time.

While there have been signs of progress in United’s play this season, consistency remains an issue that the Portuguese manager is still trying to figure out.

This time around, there are no distractions. With nothing else on the calendar, all attention should be on getting results in the league.

Beyond just three points, he will also want to see his side show more mental resilience and determination than they have in recent weeks.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, United have often been accused of falling short of the standards that once defined the club, with questions raised about the players’ mentality.

This season, Cristiano Ronaldo has openly questioned the mindset within the squad, echoing concerns Amorim voiced last year.

Following the West Ham game late in last season, Amorim called out his players for what he described as a lack of mental strength and urgency.

“We need to feel that it is the end of the world when we are not winning a game.

“Especially when we are not winning. So it’s a big problem that we have here at the club. It’s a decisive moment in the history of the club. We need to address that. It’s a big problem because it’s mentality.

“We are not scared of losing a game as Manchester United. We don’t have that fear anymore and that is the most dangerous thing that a big club can have. I think it’s a concern,” the Portuguese manager said in May.

Manchester United’s mentality will be tested against West Ham

United have long struggled to maintain consistency, often following up positive results with flat performances and disappointing defeats.

Amorim has already addressed this issue, especially after the 1-0 defeat to Everton at Old Trafford, a match the visitors won despite being down to ten men.

The recent 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace was a needed boost for Amorim and his players, particularly on the road. However, that result will lose its impact if they cannot follow it up with a win against a West Ham side struggling for form.

United cannot afford to let their guard down. They need to come out strong from the start on Thursday night.

Amorim is still under pressure to show he is moving the club in the right direction. A win over West Ham would be another important step forward.
