What to know about Wednesday's Champions League Round of 16 matches

After a long break, the UEFA Champions League is back, with the 16 teams remaining playing for the quarterfinals across two legs in March. We've seen the first suite of teams play already; on Wednesday the second suite will take the field across Europe to kick off their opening matches.

Here are storylines to follow from Wednesday's games:

Feyenoord (Netherlands) vs. Inter Milan (Italy) | 12:45 p.m. ET

Feyenoord got to the Round of 16 by beating AC Milan in a two-legged playoff; its reward is a knockout round fixture against AC Milan's cross-city rival, Inter.

Feyenoord has experienced high highs and low lows in the Champions League this season, hammering Bayern Munich 3-0 before losing 6-1 to Lille on the final day of the league phase.

Inter's journey has been a bit calmer; it conceded just one goal in its opening eight games in the tournament. Inter is the presumed favorite in this one and will hope to ride its drama-free Champions League run clear through to the quarterfinals.

Bayern Munich (Germany) vs. Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) | 3 p.m. ET

This all-German clash is all about old and new. Bayern is the traditional powerhouse, sitting pretty at first in the Bundesliga; Leverkusen is the modern challenger, adrift in second but still high off its Bundesliga trophy from last season. These two are Germany's best and its rivalry is growing feistier with each season.

Leverkusen has the better Champions League record this season, but honestly, it's not by much; just one point separated Leverkusen in sixth from Bayern in twelfth during the league phase. The teams should be evenly matched in this match ... but it was Leverkusen who prevailed in the German Cup knockout game a few months ago.

SL Benfica (Portugal) vs. Barcelona (Spain) | 3 p.m. ET

Benfica is a fabulous mix of exciting lesser-known Portuguese talent (Renato Sanchez, Tomas Araujo) and legends from all over the world (Angel Di Maria, Andrea Belotti, Nicolas Otamendi.) Barcelona, on the other hand, is stacked from top to bottom, with players like Spain's Lamine Yamal and Raphina lifting it all the way to second in the league phase table.

These two met once already in a wild and fascinating 5-4 Barcelona victory in January, but Benfica was obviously competitive ... and it will enter this one hungry for revenge.

Paris Saint German (France) vs. Liverpool (England) | 3 p.m. ET

So much for finishing first: Liverpool's reward for bossing the league phase is an all-or-nothing clash with the continent's most in-form team. PSG bounced back from early losses against Arsenal and Atletico Madrid and became Europe's fastest-maturing team in the process.

With Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappé all finally out of PSG's picture, the team is built around young talent — and that fitness and unpredictability could give Liverpool a run for its money.

"Could" is the operative word here, though, because Liverpool remains imperious in European play. If it tackles this PSG match with the same steely intensity its used in the Premier League, it will have no problem cruising through to the quarterfinals.
