In order to achieve that, however, La Dea should have finished outside the top four in Serie A, but a 3-0 win over Torino on Sunday means they have secured a fourth-placed finish this season, one point above Bologna.

Lifting the Europa League gives an extra spot in the Champions League only if the winner does not qualify for the competition through the domestic league.

With Atalanta finishing fourth, their Europa League trophy is meaningless regarding an extra Champions League spot for Serie A.

On the other hand, Bologna qualified for Europe’s elite competition by finishing fifth and using Italy’s extra spot coming from the UEFA coefficient ranking.

Atalanta still have a game in hand, which they’ll play against Fiorentina next week. A victory would allow them to finish third, leapfrogging Juventus.

Roma meet Empoli at the Stadio Castellani tonight, but they still can’t reach Bologna being five points below the Rossoblu.
