Igor Tudor has endured a nightmare start to life as the Tottenham Hotspur interim boss, losing back-to-back London derbies to Arsenal and Fulham, respectively.
The Croat wanted to see a response from his boys after the North London derby humiliation at Fulham, but it did not come. Instead, his boys were beaten 2-1 at Craven Cottage on Sunday, and the scoreline actually flattered Spurs.
Tottenham received a double injury boost heading into the Fulham game as Pedro Porro and Kevin Danso were declared fit to play. However, hours before the game, it was revealed that Djed Spence had not travelled with the squad to Craven Cottage.
According to a report from The Standard, Djed Spence sustained a minor calf issue and was subsequently ruled out of the trip to Fulham. It remains unclear when he will return to fitness.
The full-back has been dealing with a minor calf issue. Previously, he missed matches against Manchester City and Manchester United while managing the same injury. He returned to the pitch against Newcastle United, where Spurs suffered a 2-1 defeat. The game turned out to be Thomas Frank’s last as Tottenham boss as the board decided to sack him after the Newcastle loss.
Spence’s injury adds to the problems faced by the North London club, with 10 first-team players now absent through injury and suspension. Before the Fulham game, Tudor acknowledged the difficulties he inherited from Frank and concerns over the team’s physical and fitness levels.
Tottenham’s injury situation remains challenging even after the Fulham defeat. Every time a couple of players have come back from injury, a player has entered the treatment. It has been the theme this season, hampering the team’s stability, consistency and morale. It says everything about the state of the Tottenham squad, making it extremely difficult for Tudor to get the results for which he has been hired by the club.
The return of Porro and Danso was a welcome boost, even if the latter could only make an appearance off the bench against Fulham on Sunday. Tudor will be hoping Spence’s calf problem is not serious and he returns to the squad as early as possible. The interim head coach will be desperate to see the treatment room starting to clear in the coming weeks.
