Why Is Lamine Yamal Not Playing Tonight for Barcelona vs Valencia?

Barcelona will take on Valencia at the Johan Cruyff Stadium on Sunday, September 14, without Lamine Yamal. The Spanish winger is sidelined after picking up an injury before leaving for international duty with Spain.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick confirmed that Yamal is not in condition to train or play, and he will only return to professional activity once he’s fully recovered. Flick was visibly frustrated with how Spain handled the situation, criticizing the decision to give the youngster painkillers and keep him on the pitch despite already leading by three goals.

"He won't be available. He went off to play for Spain with some pain and did not train. They gave him painkillers so he could play. They had at least a three-goal lead in both matches, and he still played 73 and 79 minutes. Between the games, he wasn’t able to train. That’s not looking after the player. I’m very sad about this," Flick said when adressing the matter in a press conference on Saturday.

According to Barcelona, Lamine Yamal is dealing with an injury in the pubic area that has caused discomfort and pain. While there’s optimism that he could return to training on Monday, the club has not ruled out the possibility of him missing the upcoming UEFA Champions League clash against Newcastle.

Yamal Out, Rashford In for Barcelona

The immediate substitute for Lamine Yamal or Raphinha is Marcus Rashford. The English winger, on loan from Manchester United, is set to make his first start for Barcelona.

Having Rashford on the bench could be a valuable asset for Barça this season, as he can play on either wing or step in as a central forward—a role where he recently found more success while at Aston Villa. Still, the depth chart in attack is crowded. With Ferran Torres starting and Robert Lewandowski also available, Rashford may find himself as the third option in that forward rotation.
