Why Manchester United should outbid Galatasaray for Diogo Costa

Following the first week of Premier League action, one position at Manchester United is already standing out as an area that needs strengthening.

Ruben Amorim will be delighted with how his side performed, especially given how they controlled large stretches of their opening match against Arsenal.

From the start, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo gave Arsenal plenty to think about with their direct play going forward.

Cunha was especially impressive, causing problems with his strong runs and looking dangerous every time he picked up the ball.

United had a good case for all three points. They played some excellent football, but a couple of penalty calls didn’t go their way. To add to that, the only goal came after what looked like a clear foul on Altay Bayindir in the build-up.

It was an unfortunate way for United to miss out on what could have been a promising result.

Galatasaray submit bid for Diogo Costa

Bayindir’s mistake for United didn’t go unnoticed, with Roy Keane highlighting it despite some claims of a foul, and it’s once again put the need for a new goalkeeper back into focus for United fans.

Andre Onana is still working his way back from injury and hasn’t featured this summer, but even when he returns, there are questions about whether he’s the long-term answer.

That leaves United in a familiar position, looking for stability between the posts. And now there might be an opportunity worth exploring.

Florian Plettenberg reports that Galatasaray have put forward an offer to Porto worth £17m (€20m) plus add-ons for Diogo Costa.

The Turkish club reportedly see Costa as their backup plan if they can’t land Ederson from Manchester City. If that fee is close to what Porto are willing to accept, United should seriously consider getting involved.

Manchester United should compete with Galatasaray for Costa

Bringing in Costa would be a major boost for United, given that the Portugal international is widely regarded as one of the top keepers in the game.

The club have long been interested in him, but opted for Onana over the Porto man back in 2023.

Earlier this year, Amorim spoke with Costa about a potential move to Old Trafford, as he was seen as the preferred option if a new goalkeeper was needed during the summer window.

Bruno Fernandes has called him one of the world’s best, and that’s not an exaggeration. Until recently, his price tag was around £42m, but that figure has come down over time.

If United were to step in now and offer between £25m and £30m to outbid Galatasaray, it could prove to be a smart investment and a significant improvement over their current options.

This is one of those moves that seems too logical not to make happen.
