Joao Felix has explained why Portugal do not change their approach when Cristiano Ronaldo is absent, even as the veteran misses the team’s latest pre-World Cup friendlies.
Portugal are preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup without Ronaldo in the current camp, after the forward was left out of the friendlies against Mexico and the United States due to a minor hamstring issue.
That has naturally raised fresh questions about how the side functions without its captain. Felix, though, made it clear the tactical idea stays the same. The structure does not shift just because the personnel does.
Speaking in comments carried by O Jogo, Felix explained that Portugal’s game plan remains intact whether Ronaldo plays or not.
“We prepare for the games the same way. With him or without him, we play the same way. We don’t do anything differently.
“If another number 9 plays who isn’t Cristiano, the manager will ask him to do the same thing,” Felix said.
That response points to a clearer collective identity within the squad. Portugal may still rely on elite individuals, but the system is not built to change for one player.
It also reflects the depth now available in attack. Martinez has more than one option capable of filling the central role, even if none carry Ronaldo’s profile. So while the name changes, the instructions do not.
Felix still made one thing clear. Portugal may not alter the plan, but Ronaldo changes the level of threat when he is available.
“The number 9 will try to do what he has to do, but of course, with Cristiano, the probability of scoring is always higher,” Felix added.
That is the key distinction. The role stays the same, but the output can be different because Ronaldo remains one of the game’s most reliable finishers.
His current absence is fitness-related rather than tactical, with Portugal managing a minor hamstring issue ahead of the World Cup. That means the conversation is less about replacement and more about readiness.
Felix’s comments captured that balance well. Portugal are built to function without Ronaldo, but they are still more dangerous when he leads the line.
