Wolverhampton Wanderers travel to Stamford Bridge on November 8 to face Chelsea, in what promises to be a stern test for a team in turmoil. With Vítor Pereira being sacked after a limp 3-0 defeat to Fulham, Wolves find themselves anchored to the foot of the Premier League table. No manager, no confidence and mounting injuries have all made this a pivotal moment for the Molineux club. Against a Chelsea side keen to capitalise on home advantage, Wolves must show grit, organisation and a willingness to shift from recent poor patterns if they are to claim anything. Here is our Wolves predicted lineup.
Last time out against Fulham, Wolves switched to a 5-3-2 formation to strengthen their defence and counter-attack on the break. The starting lineup featured Sam Johnstone in goal, with a back five of Hugo Bueno, Toti Gomes, Santiago Bueno, Ladislav Krejčí, and Ki-Jana Hoever.
In midfield, a trio of Emmanuel Agbadou, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, and Marshall Munetsi supported the front two of Jørgen Strand Larsen and Jhon Arias.
Wolves head into the Chelsea game in alarmingly poor form. They remain the only team in the top seven divisions in England without a win and sit bottom of the league with 2 points in ten games and eight points adrift of safety. After the Fulham defeat and being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Saturday’s opponent, the board had to act and sack Pereira, who has not won a league game since April.
Tactically, the use of a back five with wing-backs was intended to provide both defensive solidity and wide outlets. However, Wolves struggled with possession and were dominated by Fulham’s wide play, which hindered any sustained attack. The midfield three had the difficult task of both shielding the defence and linking to the front two.
Academy coaches James Collins and Richard Walker have taken Wolves training sessions this week, and Collins took the pre-match press conference. On injuries and suspensions, he had this to say:
“Rodrigo and Doc are injured. Agbadou was sent off last week, but otherwise, the rest are available. We might see some of my young lads in the squad too.”
GK: Sam Johnstone
Defence: Ladislav Krejčí – Santiago Bueno – Yerson Mosquera
Midfield: David Møller Wolfe – André – João Gomes – Jackson Tchatchoua
Forwards: Jhon Arias – Tolu Arokodare – Jørgen Strand Larsen
