Manchester United will receive a significant boost in their defensive department after suffering from anxiety and lots of reshuffling in their backline. The Red Devils have received promising news on their defender Lisandro Martinez. Journalist Fabrizio Romano has posted on X that the Argentine has returned to full training and should be playing on the field in November.
This update should be a breath of fresh air for the already disgusted United fans. Although they have enjoyed some happiness with their recent run of wins, the team has had to suffer through defensive insecurities, which were the cause of huge headaches for the United faithful.
The 27-year-old left-footed centre-back suffered an ACL injury after awkwardly twisting while going for a tough challenge for the ball. The injury became disastrous for the Red Devils, and it was even followed by a series of setbacks which have haunted the Argentine international since 2023. The absence of Lisandro had earlier forced Ten Hag and is now even forcing Ruben Amorim to try out various combinations in the team’s backline.
Ruben Amorim, however, has decided to take a careful approach. When reporters asked about Martínez’s possible involvement against Nottingham Forest in the upcoming Premier League game, the Portuguese manager said he had to calm the player’s eagerness to return. Amorim explained that Martínez wanted to feature, but still needed more time.
The manager added that the defender had just started full sessions and would gradually regain rhythm. His caution shows a long-term view, especially as United face a congested schedule in domestic and European fixtures. The club expected him to make his comeback in October, but minor setbacks delayed his recovery.
“He wants to go to this one [Forest], he isn’t going to this one. He’s going to need time. He has started training with us. Slowly, he is going to get better.”

A former United scout, Mick Brown, also said that Lisandro Martínez will feel as good as a new signing for Manchester United and Amorim, a statement that should definitely capture the mood at Carrington as the defender nears full fitness.
Martínez’s return could reshape United’s tactics under Amorim. The team often looked disjointed and relied on long passes from deep instead of structured build-up play. With Martínez fit, United can regain a smoother rhythm at the back. His progressive passing gives a clear link between defence and attack, allowing midfielders to receive the ball higher up the pitch.
In Amorim’s setup, that change could mean a more balanced 3-4-3 formation. Martínez can play on the left side of the back three and provide width, stability, and controlled aggression. He steps into midfield with the ball, compresses space, and draws out opponents, creating openings for players like Bruno Fernandes and will now open them for Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Martínez’s defensive instincts will also give United’s pressing structure more bite. He wins one-on-one duels, which will let United push their line higher and win the ball closer to the opposition’s goal. This change can bring back the assertive football United fans want to see.
Before his injury, Martínez played over seven progressive passes per game and completed 89% of his passes; numbers that show his value in Amorim’s transition-based system. With his leadership and calmness, Martínez will yet again strengthen United’s backline and bring stability. If the Red Devils’ boss manages his minutes wisely, the Argentine can spark a tactical evolution that turns United into a far more commanding outfit at the back.
