It is now confirmed that Xabi Alonso will no longer be the manager of Bayer Leverkusen next season. The club and the man himself confirmed it today ahead of the end of the season.

The German club appointed Alonso in October 2022, when the team was near the bottom of the Bundesliga table with five points from the opening eight games of that 22/23 season.

He went on to win the Bundesliga with Leverkusen last season in a historic, undefeated campaign. The Spanish manager will now head towards joining Real Madrid as sources like Fabrizio Romano report that the move is imminent.

Alonso spoke in the press conference ahead of Leverkusen’s Bundesliga game against Borussia Dortmund this weekend.

He also hints as to when he would be able to coach Real Madrid, and it may be very soon rather than later. When asked if he had a visa to travel to the US, he laughed and smiled. This is referring to him coaching Real Madrid in the FIFA Club World Cup, which starts in a few weeks.

Alonso will only have the match against Dortmund this Sunday, and the game against Mainz on May 17th left as Bayer Leverkusen's coach. Despite not mentioning coaching Real Madrid next, he will inevitably arrive at Los Blancos.

Carlo Ancelotti's announcement

While Alonso is closer to Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti is closer to leaving the Spanish giants. Many reports suggest that his departure from the club will be announced after this weekend.

Real Madrid will play El Clásico against FC Barcelona this Sunday at the Montjuic Olympic stadium. Regardless of the result, Ancelotti’s departure from the club will be done quickly.

Along with this announcement pending, Ancelotti will also become the new coach of the Brazilian national team. Mario Coretegana from The Athletic reports that the Brazilian soccer federation will announce its new coach at the end of next week.

All or Nothing for Real Madrid

While the news surrounding a change in the managerial position excites Real Madrid fans, the team still has a chance to fight for the La Liga title. Real Madrid and Barcelona will meet again this season.

Barcelona is first with 79 points, and Real Madrid is second with 75 points. Four league games are left for both teams, and a win for either team is crucial for this title race.

If Madrid wins, they will be just a point behind Barcelona, but if Barca wins, they could officially win the league title with a win against Espanyol next Thursday. Barcelona has beaten Real Madrid three times this season. This will be Madrid's last chance to win a major trophy this season.
