Life at Stamford Bridge is looking up again after several inconsistent seasons of following BlueCo’s takeover. Off the back of a strong finish to the 2024/25 campaign, Chelsea appear determined to strengthen their squad and have been heavily linked with RB Leipzig winger Xavi Simons. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Dutchman did not train with his Leipzig teammates on Friday, fuelling speculation that his move to Chelsea is edging closer.
The news that Simons did not train with Leipzig and will not be part of their squad against Atalanta on August 2 is significant and suggests he will join Chelsea imminently. The Dutchman had already removed Leipzig from his Instagram bio, fuelling speculation that his move to Stamford Bridge is edging closer. Negotiations between the clubs are at an advanced stage.
It’s been a busy summer for Enzo Maresca and the Chelsea sporting directors with several new signings, including Joao Pedro and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. Joao Felix and Noni Madueke, among others, have departed Stamford Bridge this summer. It now appears Jorrel Hato and Xavi Simons will be the next significant arrivals into Maresca’s talented Chelsea squad.
Simons’ career has gone from strength to strength in recent years, with excellent performances for PSV, RB Leipzig and the Dutch national team. The Chelsea wide players often frustrated last season, but Simons is direct and will undoubtedly entertain the Stamford Bridge faithful. He is at his best when isolating a defender in a one-on-one situation.
He will bring a new counter-attack threat to Maresca’s team. He possesses exceptional composure on the ball, meaning he will slot in perfectly alongside players such as Cole Palmer.
It feels like a matter of when, not if, this deal gets done. Simons looks set to be an exciting addition to Chelsea’s frightening new-look attack.
