While Riccardo Calafiori and Andrea Cambiaso pulled out of the trip to Germany, the good news for Italy coach Luciano Spalletti is that Mattia Zaccagni is back in training.

The Azzurri are preparing for the second leg of the Nations League quarter-final against Germany, which kicks off at the Signal Iduna Park on Sunday at 19.45 GMT.

They have a very small chance of going through to the Final Four, having lost the first leg 2-1 at San Siro on Thursday.

Calafiori slipped in the final minutes of that match and tore the collateral ligament in his left knee, so has been sent back to Arsenal for further tests.

Cambiaso was in the stands and hoping to recover in time for the second leg, but evidently suffered a relapse and was sent home to Juventus today.

Zaccagni the only boost for Azzurri

So far, coach Spalletti has not called in any replacements, as he is expected to use Napoli defender Alessandro Buongiorno in the centre.

There is some positive news from the training camp, because Zaccagni took part in the full session today and is therefore available to face Germany.

The Lazio forward would either be used on the left wing of a 3-5-2 formation or in place of Giacomo Raspadori as a support striker.

Other possible changes include Samuele Ricci stepping in for Nicolò Rovella in midfield and Raoul Bellanova replacing Destiny Udogie out wide.
