Zlatan Ibrahimovic under investigation for 'alleged financial interest in a betting company'

AC Milan superstar striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic put pen to paper on a contract extension last week that will keep him with the Serie A club past his 40th birthday. However, Reuters reports that the 39-year-old is under UEFA investigation due to an "alleged financial interest in a betting company."

The story notes that Ibrahimovic is a part-owner of the betting company Bethard, which is a violation of the FIFA Code of Ethics that says footballers cannot have working relationships with any businesses that "promote, broker, arrange or conduct betting, gambling, lotteries or similar events or transactions connected with football matches and competitions."

Ibrahimovic could face a fine of over $109,000 and a ban from any football-related activities for up to three years. He returned to the Sweden men's national team after a five-year hiatus from international football in March.

It's difficult to imagine either UEFA or FIFA would want to prematurely end Ibrahimovic's career considering his age and star status, but he may be required to pay what is, for him, an insignificant fine.
