As summertime looms, and the south swell season is incoming, the famed big-wave beachbreak of Puerto Escondido (aka the “Mexican Pipeline”) is roaring to life.

But recently, authorities captured a curious visitor at a beach nearby Puerto Escondido – a whopping 10-foot-long, 727 crocodile cruising in the shoreline.

The beast was wrangled just north of Playa Zicatela, with men using ropes to restrain the giant crocodile. They successfully nabbed the massive reptile, then hauled it from the beach on an ATV. And, of course, posing for a photo with their catch. See below.

Per a local Oaxaca news source:

“Tense moments were experienced on Bacocho Beach, in the municipality of San Pedro Mixtepec, after the sighting of a huge crocodile that had apparently been swept to the area by the swell.

“The specimen, which measures approximately three meters long, was secured on the afternoon of April 6, under strict safety protocols.

“Authorities emphasized that the primary objective was to safeguard the well-being of tourists and residents, as well as to ensure the animal's welfare during its capture.”

And the creature was captured safely, according to reports, with officials relocating the crocodile to a different location, away from tourists and locals enjoying the beach.

Per Mexico Daily News:

“In a video shared on social media, Civil Protection’s personnel are seen capturing the animal and transporting it on an ATV to another location.

“After it was confirmed that the animal had no injuries, it was taken to the Lagunita de Punta Colorada, a coastal body of water that authorities considered suitable within the crocodile’s habitat in the coastal area of San Pedro Mixtepec.”

Although crocodiles are somewhat rare in the ocean, sightings (and the occasional attack on humans) do happen. More recently, big-wave surfer Nathan Florence had an encounter with a different creature while in the lineup at Puerto Escondido. At first, he thought it was a great white – but then, he realized it was a more docile whale shark.

Stay tuned for more action from Puerto Escondido – hopefully sans crocodiles – as the Mexican Pipeline turns on for the summer season.
