The recent XL run of swell in the North Atlantic surely has kept all of the big wave seekers on the European side of the ocean quite busy as of late. Big wave events at Nazaré and Punta Galea both went down over the weekend thanks to a huge swell that peaked on Saturday. Amidst all of that action, Ireland has certainly been getting its fair share of crazy days as well.
Irish big wave legend Conor Maguire was towed into an absolute bomb on his first wave of the day in giant Mullaghmore. Afterwards he said that it was, "Pretty much as good as gets, almost as big as it gets. These waves are fing nuts so pretty happy to lock into one on my first wave. Thanks to Dylan for putting me in the spot."
The lead up to the wave is what you don't see but, if you could imagine, it's not like going out for some fun waves. The recent swells and storms have been supercharged and that makes for treacherous conditions at spots like Mullaghmore. Conor says, "It's crazy just trying to get ready for something like this, mentally, when you know the charts are absolutely insane. It's not quite as big as the day we had five years ago but you never know what it's going to be like when there's numbers like that in the charts."
Although it wasn't the biggest ever, the day certainly stands out in the wild run that has kept the lads feasting on big waves for nearly a month. On December 6th, fellow legendary Irish charger Gearoid Mcdaid posted this reel talking about the run and how there had already been multiple back-to-back days at Mully and steady surf throughout the region.
Not long ago Kai Lenny, Nate Florence, Natxo Gonzalez and other members of the Red Bull team were all in Sligo for a big wave training camp and had several solid sessions with locals like Conor and Gearoid. It was over two weeks ago that Natxo and them scored some of the season opening swells and the locals have been scoring ever since.
