When an artist was commissioned by a San Diego legacy surf brand to paint a mural on their building, she gladly obliged. However, nearly a year later, she was never paid. So, she took to social media.
Hanna Daly (who goes by HannaMurals) posted a video about the mural dispute, and that Instagram Reel amassed over a million views. Rusty was officially in the crosshairs. And now, following the viral post, and some legal action taken, Daly has announced that she’s been paid the full fee.
In an update post, Daly wrote: “I got paid thanks to all of your support! To be clear, @rustyworldwide stepped in and did the right thing by paying me even though this was not their responsibility. The mural was commissioned by local San Diego @rustysurfboards and they are the only one at fault here. Rusty as a global brand did the right thing, and they were very unhappy with how I was treated by their licensee.”
Previously, Daly had posted that the mural was painted in July of last year. She claimed the shop, “loved it and praised my talents.” For the job, she even spent about a grand renting a scissor lift and on other supplies. And when she asked for payment, allegedly, the business hired a lawyer and sent her a cease-and-desist letter.
However, that’s when the Rusty brand at large stepped in.
And for Daly, it wasn’t just about the money. It was about the principle. Before the latest news about the payment, she noted that she would donate the money, instead of pocketing it herself.
“My goal is to run my business with dignity and add to my local community,” Daly wrote. “On that note, if Rusty Surfboards pays me what I’m owed, I will donate 50% to the Surfrider San Diego Foundation and 50% to CAF Adaptive Surf Youth Program. I am an open water swimmer, and I care about the health of our oceans and our local surf community.”
