There are certain figures in the surf world whose heroic acts of bravery, generosity, and kindness are so numerous, so legendary, that you don’t know where to begin.
In fact, legendary is the first word that comes to mind when Darrick Doerner’s name is mentioned. A veteran lifeguard, pioneering big wave hellman, tow god, Hollywood stuntman, Double-D as he’s more commonly referred, is one of the most thoroughly and universally adored figures in the culture. And now, he needs our help.
DD has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and is in the fight of his life. The treatment he needs is costly, and as anyone who knows him can attest, he’s never been one to ask for help. But today, the man who’s stood watch over countless legendary performances and historic sessions at Sunset Beach, Jaws, Teahupo’o, Waimea Bay, and Hawaii’s Outer Reefs, charging some of the heaviest surf on the planet while mentoring and looking out for countless young, aspiring big wave surfers and lifeguards, is calling on his extended 'ohana.
They’ve set up a GoFundMe to support DD’s medical care and ease the financial burden on him and his family. Every dollar you give goes directly toward his treatment, recovery, and quality of life during this challenging time.
Double-D is one of the greatest watermen of our time, and this is a chance to give back to someone who’s given so much. If you can donate, please do. If you can’t, a share, a repost, or a few words of support make a difference. Together, we can surround him with the same strength, aloha, and resilience he’s shown the surfing world for decades. Please donate here.
