Polly Ralda recently experienced a one-two punch, literally, in Hawaii.

The big wave surfer – originally from Guatemala, who had big dreams of big waves, and thus moved to the North Shore of Oahu – kicked off her winter season with a board to the face, as well as dodging an outrigger canoe while in the lineup at sizeable Waimea Bay.

See the footage of the latter below.

“One of the scariest moments of my surfing life,” Ralda explained. “I had just gotten an epic wave and was paddling back to the lineup, still catching my breath, when suddenly this SUPER wide set stood up on the horizon.”

That’s when the outrigger came barreling in her direction. At the last second, the canoe changed course and knifed the wave, with Ralda right in its path. Luckily, miraculously, both the canoe and Ralda (and her surfboard) came out without a scratch.

“And then, pure ocean magic, a water bubble lifted my board just enough to keep it from snapping in half,” she continued. “I got tossed but somehow came up unscratched … and the canoe came out perfectly fine too.”

But speaking of scratches, that wasn’t the end of it. In a seemingly separate incident, Ralda was smacked by her surfboard right in the face. By the looks of it, she got pretty lucky, too. The wound narrowly missed her eyeball.

“Yours truly was on a super good wave,” she said via Instagram Story. “Then I kicked out, and the board hit me on my face. I think it was the nose of the board.”

Ralda ended up getting a handful of stitches from the accident, but will surely be back in the water soon. What a way to start the season, huh?
