Prior to bursting on the Hollywood scene with the force of a hammer from a Norse god, Chris Hemsworth was a surf dog, along with his brothers, riding waves around their hometown of Melbourne, Australia. And since his ascension through blockbuster, action-packed silver screen glory, he’s remained true to his roots – surfing as much as possible in between filming and fathering.
The latest being a(nother) trip to the Kelly Slater Slater Wave Company’s Middle East wave pool, Surf Abu Dhabi. And by the looks of it, Hemsworth has the place dialed – sitting in lengthy tubes, and cracking the lip across the world’s longest artificial wave. Check it out below:
“Another epic trip to Abu Dhabi!! Spent 4 days surfing in the dessert eating good food and all round good vibes,” Hemsworth captioned the footage from the trip.
Previously, during a particularly epic and also deadly swell that hit back home in Australia over Easter weekend, Hemsworth snagged a serious bomb. Surfing with former pros, Bede Durbidge and Luke Munro, Hemsworth was whipped into a bomb via jet ski assist, and got properly shacked. And it prompted praise from surf world elites – “That’s insane,” commented Kai Lenny.
Wave pools, on the other hand, have been on Hemsworth’s radar since the modern explosion of synthetic surf spots. He’s sampled some of the world’s best, including Slater’s Abu Dhabi operation. But it all feeds back to his lifelong surfing obsession, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down.
“I’ve always loved surfing,” as he told GQ. “It’s one of the few things that holds my attention completely and in its entirety. It was all I thought about the entire week [as a kid]. I didn’t really have much of a social life during high school. I wasn’t really going out to parties. All I wanted to do was surf and watch movies. It kept me out of trouble, I think. There are far worse addictions out there.”
