Donavon Frankenreiter, the belovedSurfer/singer/songwriter is hitting the road on an upcoming the Get Outta Your Mind Tour across the Southwest and California, Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas.
His new album, recorded in Hawaii, was finished recently and already released single. Frankenreiter told SURFER intends to debut one single a month leading up to the release of the entire album, Get Out Of Your Mind, which will coincide with the 18-date tour starting later this month. There will even be a lone stop in Nashville, Tennessee.
A South Orange County local, Donny cut his wave-riding teeth at home breaks from the San Clemente Pier to Laguna Beach, eventually entering the pro ranks. A surfing prodigy, Donavon turned pro at just 16 years old. His combination of natural style, unchained charisma, radical flair, and high energy quickly made him a surfing celebrity far beyond the competitive pro scene. His funky, star quality allowed him to attract and keep sponsorships as much for his irresistible personality as his elegant matadorial surf style. Billabong, Boost Mobile, Sanuk footwear and plenty of others found his combo of music and surf was more attractive to their audience than a top WSL competitor.
As a Soul surfing, ambassador at large, his musical journey fit nicely alongside his professional surfing career. He kept his guitar with him as a constant companion. But as his music gained traction, picking up radio play and selling out venues, his surfing became a second fiddle.
For the last 20 years, Frankenreiter has toured worldwide, bringing audiences his unique blend of soulful grooves, catchy, quirky lyrics, and California roots. Playing with seminal indie and surf rockers like Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Matt Costa, G. Love & Special Sauce and more raised Frankenreiter’s profile. But it was his own unique acoustic singer/songwriter sound that and catapulted him into a surprisingly successful music career.
This new tour looks to be one of his most interesting. And that’s saying something for a guy who has opened for Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson and the Doobie Brothers. Donny’s fan following has something of a Honk meets Grateful Dead feel to it. If you have followed Donovan since the beginning you won’t want to miss seeing him at one of the many small, intimate venues this tour has booked. If you are just getting to know his music, this is the perfect time to catch his act - and do a deep dive into this catalog.
