In the midst of a raucous party over the summer, a seasoned hardcore local suddenly got emotional and reverental. This senior statesman is an intimidating figure in lineups and has his pick of the points in his hometown, but during our conversation he acknowledged a surfer near his age whose gravitas is felt far and wide.

Michael Ho is my idol,” he said.

It's easy to see why. When this local was coming into his own, Michael Ho was dominating in Hawaii and winning the 1982 Pipeline Masters with a broken wrist. But also it’s the exemplary longevity, not nostalgia, makes Uncle Mike so celebrated. After all, Michael is 67 years old and still getting set waves across the North Shore.

Take this clip above from Mason Ho and his partner in film, Rory Pringle. It’s a glimpse of how crowded and hectic the North Shore can get after months of dormancy. Based on the footage, Michael and Mason prove adept at weaving through bodies and into Velzyland double-ups. Two-time CT winner Barron Mamiya also gets a crack at the right.

Also, it looks like the Hos are still getting the latest and greatest from …Lost Surfboards. The team has made yet another fun-looking sled in the form of the Pisces. The zodiac-inspired name comes from the Latin word for fish, but it can be ridden as a quad, twin, 2+1 or a thruster. The board a progression of the trusty 1996 Round Nose Fish but with more bells and whistles. Added nose rocker, wider wings and deeper concave make this thing a sleek little package. Or as Matt Biolos called it, a  “souped-up, sleeked-down hot rod.” Mason rode his 5’3” so well at V-Land that his dad allegedly got on the phone with the shapers and demanded the same model. Here’s to many more Mason and Michael party waves.
