Ethan Ewing,Jack Robinson, Italo Ferreira, and now Griffin Colapinto. That’s four out of the top five from the 2024 Championship Tour who have dropped hammers wallets at Abu Dhabi’s newest water park. Will John John Florence make a trip to the UAE anytime soon? With the Hawaii forecast looking promising, that’s TBD.
But back to Griffin. It wasn’t all 5-star living for him, Crosby, Cole Houshman, filmer Shane Kreutzer and pal Jacob Atwood on the way to Abu Dhabi. One 16-hour flight from LA to Abu Dhabi got delayed, leading to an overnight and sleep-deprived layover in the Doha airport (an FI race in the city negated the possibility of a hotel room. A sobering reminder that even the world’s best surfers are not immune to the ordeals of global travel.
Fortunately, the team made it onto Hudayriyat Island with minutes to spare, got a quick orientation from Surf Abu Dhabi’s surf GM Mitch Crews, and proceeded to have a ball on the minute-long walls. No surprise, Griffin looks locked in from the jump. Considering he won the Surf Ranch Pro in Lemoore in 2022, which is where the Abu Dhabi tech came from, he’ll be one to watch when the CT arrives here in February 2025. Note that his rodeo flip at 6:44 came after a series of snaps and a long backside barrel.
It's like Lemmore, but bigger and faster. You can see the guys getting analytical about placement and timing. Griffin discusses the nuances of blowtails with Crosby and the finer points of the wave. "At the Surf Ranch, you can do a big turn and airdrop into the barrel at the end. Here I feel like you can't really do that because it runs off so quick," Griffin pontificates.
But they also let their hair down, as evidenced by a trip to an outrageously huge waterpark, a lavish waterfront dinner, and Crosby’s full-froth POV from the tube. Wild times in Abu Dhabi.
