The world’s biggest wave (that we know of) has been viewed from many angles.
Primarily, the cliffside at Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal is jam-packed with spectators, photographers, videographers, drone operators, etc. any time a massive swell funnels into the underwater canyon from the Atlantic, then unloads on the famed big wave spot.
However, what do the waves see as they come towering towards the shore? Well, one lensman decided to point their camera in the opposite direction, showing the sheer power and beauty of a Nazaré beast as it slammed into the iconic cliffs, bathing the bluff in a brutal display of Mother Nature’s power. Take a look at the unique angle below.
Marcio Costa, a drone operator, provided the video, showing something most folks never see at Nazaré. If you’re one of the brave few, who are in the water when Nazaré is flexing its mammoth waves, then this is the angle you see when looking towards shore.
It’s also the spot that no surfer wants to go – into the rocks, with slim chances of escape. Over the years, a handful of jet skis have been washed into this area, a couple surfers, too.
But luckily, with the assist from a drone, this rare angle didn’t require putting any lives on the line to achieve. Just some expensive camera equipment.
In a poetic screed describing his capture, calling it The Veil of the Archangel, Costa wrote:
Nazaré spoke loudly once again.
A wave rises and dresses the Fort like a veil — The Veil of The Archangel.
This will likely be my last video before we enter the new year.
A reminder that nature doesn’t rush — it arrives when it must. Just two shots… but to me, some of the most beautiful I captured in 2025 — non-surf footage.
Raw, real, powerful.
