Nowadays, there’s an abundance of obscure and strange holidays, sprinkled throughout the year for nearly every day to celebrate. For example, there’s “Buffet Day” (January 2nd), “Grilled Cheese Day” (April 12th), and “Bologna Day” (October 24th)…just to name a few to mark your calendars.
And some seem obviously frivolous – looking at you, Bologna Day – but some come with a message, a call to action, a purpose, a message for those passionate enough to support it.
One might think that today, International Surfing Day, is just another day to go catch a couple waves, spend the day at the beach, maybe even purchase a new stick to support the industry. But it’s much more than that. The oceans, and surfers serving as stewards to protect it, come together on this day for a set of common goals: 1) to celebrate the space that has given us endless amounts of joy, and 2) to ensure that the ocean is happy and healthy for that joy to span generations.
Beginning in 2005, International Surfing Day has grown over the years, spanning across the globe, and getting surfers involved in giving back to the ocean that’s given them so much. The Surfrider Foundation lays it out like this:
“The ocean makes up most of our planet, and plays a crucial role in our health and survival. Unfortunately this precious resource has been abused by humans for far too long. And now, more than ever, the ocean needs more friends… Surfing is an amazing gift and the beach is an incredible place that should be healthy, safe and accessible to all people. As surfers and beachgoers alike, it is our responsibility to foster a vibrant, inclusive community that comes together to protect and enjoy this extraordinary resource.”
When you think about it, the act of riding a wave is just a small part of surfing.
With oceans amassing more than 70 percent of the earth, surfers are some of the most in touch individuals with the world’s most prevalent, and important, natural resource. There’s the golden rule – pick up three pieces of trash when you go to the beach. But there’s also so much more; there’s shopping for sustainable projects, organizing and participating in beach cleanups, donating to non-profits who work tirelessly to ensure the health and safety of the world’s oceans.
Here at SURFER, we’re honored to partner with Costa Sunglass for this International Surf Day. One initiative the folks at Costa have started is their Untangled Collection in which: “Each pair is meticulously crafted from recycled fishing nets, helping to reduce ocean waste and protect marine life… By choosing these shades, you’re not just protecting your eyes; you’re also playing a vital role in ocean conservation.”
So, this year, don’t let International Surfing Day play out like Bologna Day. Get involved. Do your part. Ensure this vital resource remains intact for future generations to come.
But also, don’t forget to catch a few waves.
