The “king of storms,” some have called Typhoon Ragasa.

After wreaking havoc in the Philippines, the storm – which at one point had winds the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane (150 mph) – moved onto Taiwan, where at least 17 people died, and then Hong Kong, where businesses were inundated with water. In particular, the glass door to a hotel lobby was shattered by an 11-foot wave.

While the dust settles from the super storm, footage is flooding in from the damage that the typhoon left in its wake. Like on Orchid Island in the Philippines, where massive waves struck the coast, with one local comparing them to a tsunami.

“Yesterday was very scary,” Hana Tsai, a Taipei resident working on Orchid Island. “It gives me goosebumps when I think about it. It was like the end of the world. That’s all I can say. I thought the waves would hit us anytime and we couldn’t run away. It was so large it gives me the chills.”

Video shows gigantic waves slamming over towering rocks, engulfing the coastline entirely with the mighty fury of mother nature. Tsai added:

“While we were having dinner yesterday, none of us were using our phones, usually everyone would be using their phones. Last night none of us were using our phones. We were all looking outside. If it hits us, we will run upstairs. How do I describe the wind? It felt like it could blow you away. Our hair was like this, and we couldn’t even open our eyes. We could only walk with our umbrellas like this and lowered our heads as we moved forward.”

At one point, they even wondered if the waves were something greater than a storm. Like, perhaps, a tsunami? Tsai continued:

“We looked up at the huge waves and thought: ‘Is that a tsunami?’ If the waves went over our heads, we wouldn’t have had anywhere to run. We could only pray to live another day.”

Now, Ragasa has been downgraded to a severe tropical storm, after once being dubbed, “the most powerful storm on earth this year.”
