The videos of Jamie O’Brien are the stuff of legend within the surfing vlogosphere.
A quick scroll through his YouTube page, and the words “biggest” and “best” and “massive” appear multiple times, simply from a cursory glance. The dude knows how to work the algorithm, coupled an early entry into the vlogging game, and the North Shore of Oahu native has racked up over one million followers on the platform.
So, when JOB posts, which he does often, people watch. Like his latest, entitled, “THE WEDGE OPENING DAY GOES XXL!” (Yes, most titles are all caps, too.)
“I’m freaking out, dude,” JOB says when he arrives on the sand at Newport Beach, CA’s infamous novelty wave. “It’s firing. Oh my god. That’s the best I’ve ever seen it out here. And the size? This wave coming in right now is absolutely incredible. Are you freaking kidding me? That thing’s a monster! Let’s go!”
It’s not the first we’ve seen from the uncommon, historic early-season south swell event, which hit the West Coast over the weekend. In fact, we’ve seen lots.
There were other moments in and around The Wedge – like a boat motoring through Newport Harbor as a gigantic wave detonated on the other side of the jetty. Or, to the south of The Wedge, at Corona Del Mar State Beach, the rarity of waves breaking there was captured, too.
As for JOB’s session at The Wedge, riddled with superlatives, the most psyched surfing YouTuber on the planet concluded:
“That was like the biggest barrel I’ve ever gotten at The Wedge. It was so wide. I was like, ‘am I at Pipeline?’ Then, I wiped out, and it felt like I was at Waimea. It was trying to rip my legs apart. I just crawled back to the beach. It was bombing.”
And with a potential "Godzilla" El Niño on the horizon, more Wedge shenanigans to come.
