This week John John Florence dropped the third installment of his acclaimed "Vela" series on YouTube. Featuring high-seas adventures through the North and South Islands of New Zealand, the 19-minute cut starts off in some playful, pastoral Kiwi combers, but by edit's end, John's gotten himself into heavy, heart-pounding, frigid slabs. Off the grid and charging, it's a testament to the soft-spoken confidence the man has in his abilities in and on the water.

But this episode hits different given what's been happening back on the North Shore, where John calls home when he's not at sea for months at a time.

"For those who get a chance to watch, the proceeds from this episode will support North Shore families who need help after the recent floods," shared John on Instagram. "If you want to support directly the @lahuifoundation is a great place to start!"

The Lahui Foundation has played an instrumental role in the North Shore recovery effort after a recent Kona Low system brought catastrophic flooding to parts of the islands. They've garnered the support of Jack Johnson (whose son Moe's music is featured in this edit) and other notable people in the North Shore community by providing direct aid to those hit hardest by the disaster.

As another weather system appears to be bearing down on Hawaii, potentially bringing more flooding, our thoughts are with everyone in the islands during these challenging times.

And if you're half a world away, wondering what you can do, tune intoThe Beginning | Vela | Presented by Yeti. While you marvel at how far John's pushing himself and his young family, remember, proceeds go to helping the North Shore community ... so share it with some friends!
