Give Kai Lenny credit, the guy can switch lanes better than Vin Diesel. He’ll foil, kite, windsurf, tow and paddle whenever, wherever. In the past few years, however, Kai’s added another layer to his surfing: switching, on occasion, from regularfoot to goofyfoot.
It’s not some novelty gimmick either. Kai sees real value in putting his right foot forward for a change. “You’re working a different part of your brain while in the opposite stance,” he told me last year after going switch at Pipeline. “It’s a real exercise to have your body mechanics do the same technique, but mirrored. When you go back to the normal stance, your technique gets even more refined because your brain just had to work really hard to process it, and now it’s in a natural neural pathway. That’s the benefit of going switch. Even if you don’t go gnarly with it, it will make your normal surfing better.”
Neuroplasticity, body mechanics, function over fashion, whatever you want to call it, Kai’s into it. The video above might be his most convincing and consistent case for it. Somehow, Kai got a window of empty Greenbush and proceeded to pull into tubes above one of the sharpest reefs in the Mentawai Islands.
However, I must note, to commit to the goofyfoot life, the leash should be on the back foot.
