Killer whales – also known as orcas – are apex ocean predators.

The species is at the top of the oceanic food chain, thanks to their high intelligence, large bodies (up to 26 feet in length and over 12,000 pounds), knack for hunting in packs (akin to wolves), sharp teeth, carnivorous appetite, and other such lethal factors. And yet, there are no documented attacks on humans in the wild.

But this guy below almost became the first. Take a look.

The footage comes from Argentina, and shows a kayaker scrambling to shore, as a very large orca follows him, coming into the shallows. The man even flips over in his kayak, at one point, likely due to the terror coursing through his veins.

It was posted by Península Valdés Orca Research (PVOR) an organization based in Argentina, with a “mission is to study the population of orca in this protected area, including their genealogy through photo identification methods, their behavior, and their specialized foraging techniques, unique in the world.”

The caption reads as follows:

“Bahía Rosas, Golfo San Matías, Río Negro Province. Today, May 25, 2026, in the afternoon, the male orca Pao (PTN-006) was involved in a situation we had never witnessed before. Most likely, the sound of paddles in the water attracted Pao, who thought he had encountered potential prey (sea lion). Upon reaching the shore, realizing it was a person in a canoe, he turned around and headed back out to sea.

“There exist no records of orca attacks on humans, except in captivity. Nevertheless, we can only imagine the fear this person must have felt. Thank you, Mili Yahuar, for sharing your video! Thank you also to Fernando Mariño and Matías Acuña for alerting us!”

It’s true. There are no documented killer whale attacks on humans in the wild. However, there have been several fatalities with orcas in captivity – three of which involved a single male, Tilikum (nicknamed Tilly), who spent most of his life at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida.

Maybe this orca was just curious and wanted to be friends?
