Somewhere in the middle of the pandemic, in a brief window of time when travel to Indonesia opened up and surfers were able to get back to the business of chasing waves through the archipelago, an all-star crew of San Clemente legends hoped a flight and got to work.

Led by Kolohe Andino, the guest list for the trip included Griffin and Crosby Colapinto, Ian Crane and Luke Davis. Taking the remote, and largely empty, Mentawai Islands by storm, the fruits of their labor were documented in what was to become the surf film “Reckless Isolation," which originally dropped back in 2021.

Just released on YouTube, for Andino, the endeavor marked his first time producing a surf movie from start to finish. The rookie filmmaker planned and funded the project, as well as oversaw the filming and the editing.

“With everything we all have going on in our lives and careers, we don’t have a lot of time to actually take trips together and surf. I’m so stoked we were able to take advantage of this time,” Andino said at the time.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Andino’s been part of a host of surf films, but this was the first time he’d taken on the creative and production responsibilities. Developing the film via the production company Stagnant Ambition, the project was the start of a new chapter in Andino’s role as an influencer in and out of the water.

“Obviously, it’s different when you’re not just performing in front of the camera but have to think of all the details. There’s so much that goes into it. I learned a ton,” Andino explained.

When the film was in the can, Andino and crew lit up the night with a premiere in San Clemente, followed by another screening the following night at the famous La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas. They'd go on to tour the film in about a dozen more cities before eventually releasing it on Red Bull TV in 2021. They even donated proceeds from the tour to Project Nasi, which helped provide relief for communities in need in Bali when the country was locked down and tourism was extremely impacted.

It's weird to think that five years ago the world was locked down and the simple act of going surfing was considered a crime in many places. Surf trips were a no-go. Indo was shut down. Then Kolohe and crew reminded us that surfers have always played by a different set of rules. "Reckless Isolation" reminds us of this.
