Hawaiian surfing legend, waterman, and 1962 West Coast Surfing Championships winner, Ilima Kalama has died. He was 82 years old.

Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Kalama began surfing the storied shores of Waikiki at a young age. In his teens, his family moved to Newport Beach, CA. And at the age of 19, he won the West Coast Surfing Championships, held in Huntington Beach, defeating a field of hearty competitors of the day, including Mickey Muñoz, Rusty Miller, and Mike Haley.

Following news of his passing, tributes from the surf world began pouring in.

In one post, 1977 World Champion Shaun Tomson remembered: “True style from the heart and soul. Art not artifice.”

Ilima was also the father of Dave Kalama, one of the innovative members of the “Strapped Crew,” who pioneered surfing gigantic Jaws on Maui with the help of jet-ski assists, and strap-in surfboards, paving the way for the chargers of today.

Before his passing, another great surfer of the 1960s, Corky Carroll, penned a tribute to his friend ahead of Ilima’s induction into the Surfer’s Hall of Fame. He remembered his historic win at the 1962 West Coast Championships as such:

“The surf was big and gnarly that year with a lot of wind chop and bump on it. Ilima was one of the very few surfers in the event who was able to handle the extreme conditions. He was most definitely a great surfer, that was obvious. Beautiful Hawaiian kinda style, smooth and in total control. Big well-built dude with a lot of power, yet still graceful. Very impressive.”

Corky added:

“The man is a true legend in surfing.  I can’t wait to see him get inducted into the Surfer’s Hall of Fame at 9 a.m. on Aug. 2, and am happy that I get to be there this year and shake his hand.”

Rest in peace to a legendary waterman, Ilima Kalama.
