As the catastrophic Los Angeles fires continue to burn, while some of the dust starts to settle, the personal, human stories are beginning to emerge from the rubble. These are the folks who lost their homes – and their lives, in some cases, with the death toll still rising – amidst the devastating inferno.
One such tragedy was Randy “The Craw” Miod, aka “Malibu’s man of mystery.” Since his late teens, Miod lived in a little red shack on PCH in Malibu, affectionately dubbed “The Crab Shack.” It was there that he had an open-door policy, welcoming surfers in between sessions, hosting raucous parties, and ultimately, perishing with his cat when the fires spread wildly into the vicinity.
Local news remembered Miod with this spot:
The Craw’s free spirit touched the surf world far and wide, including Todd Proctor of Proctor Surfboards. At a young age, Proctor was convinced by Craw to pursue his passion: shaping surfboards. And decades later, that nudge proved prudent for the successful Ventura-based shaper.
Proctor honored his late friend as such:
“If you had the experience of knowing the Craw, you would know a pure, childlike soul that always lived life full tilt, kept you on your toes, kept you laughing, and who always left the door to his beloved ‘Shack’ at the beach open to his friends…unless it was early in the morning…then you might get yelled at and something thrown at you. Craw brought people together everywhere he went. But home base was his eclectic old red panel wood house across from Carbon Canyon where there was always something happening…and usually quite loud.”
Proctor continued:
“Like a big brother, I always looked up to Randy for his approach to life: unbridled enthusiasm and reckless abandon combined with taking the time to get to know people. But he didn’t stop there. He would find out what you were into, and would encourage you. He was an encourager and would build you up. That’s a very rare trait in a world that seems full of people tearing each other down.”
The Malibu surf community lost a good one. Rest in peace, Craw.
