Mikey February and Channel Islands Surfboards just dropped the best board promo you’ll see today. It’s all about the Feb’s Fish, Mikey February’s latest signature model with the Santa Barbara-based board-building powerhouse.
Accompanying the release of the board is a much-anticipated video of Mikey demonstrating its properties. “Spearfish” showcases the design in full: a classic, retro-inspired fish but with a modern “engine” that lets Mikey do his thing. After several screenings across the United States East and West Coasts this month, M Feb and CI finally set the video free to the internet. And it is worth the wait.
The film, which is playing on Channel Islands’ YouTube, was produced by Mikey’s new video platform Spearhead Unlimited. Most of the footage was shot by Ian Thurtell, edited by Sam Smith, and slapped with a tasteful score by the Albert Bof trio.
Mikey, who stands 6'3” and 165 pounds, takes his 5'5” and toys with Uluwatu lefts and other Indonesian peaks, then rips into it on peaks in Mexico, Morocco, California, and Maldives. The outcome is no surprise but welcome nonetheless: Mikey properly rips this thing. He makes it look fast and fun, riding it in waves big and small, soft and hollow.
Here’s how the CI team described Mikey’s second signature model: Our Feb's Fish is the latest result of Michael February's never-ending curiosity for exploring new lines through designs shaped by Britt Merrick. Sometimes Mikey's requests are for original concepts, while others are his new take on a classic design. The latter was the case when he asked Britt for a traditional fish outline but that it have a contemporary engine (modern bottom contours, rocker, etc.) and finely foiled rails so it could be ridden at the highest performance levels possible.
During its R&D revisions and refinement, Febs discovered this new fish comfortably covered a wide range of conditions: from dredging tubes in Mainland Mexico to highlining with ease at Rincon, to effortlessly getting up on rail and hitting tightly arcing turns with full commitment and confidence at places like Jeffrey's Bay and Morocco, to groveling at Emma Wood. It is now a staple board in his travel quiver and is his go-to design when just cruising at home.
