The best advertisement of the year shouldn’t belong to some high-priced creative agency in Manhattan. It should go to Channel Islands Surfboards and Mikey February for the scintillating Spearfish. In 16 minutes they created a masterpiece of surf cinema and convinced who knows how many surfers to trade cash for a pristine new twin fin.

The video below offers Mikey’s insight on his Feb’s Fish, his second signature board with CI. When the lanky South African approached Britt Merrick with a retro fish as a template, he essentially wanted a more contemporary model based on a classic design. Something that would carry him with speed from Emma Wood to Jeffreys Bay.

After a couple of iterations, the Feb’s Fish was finally ready to fly. Some of the adjustments they made included a narrower tail, added vee and a continuous rocker out of the nose and tail. Those attributes helped with the vertical approach Mikey so kindly demonstrates. For reference, Mikey is 6’3” and 165 pounds and trashes a 5’5” x 20” ⅛ x 2” 5/16.

“You still have that speed when you’re going through a flat section, but with that added rocker you’re able to have a tighter turning radius. Especially when you get off your back foot. It really allows you to get in the pocket and be able to access different parts of the wave that you normally can’t on a traditional fish.”

A great board, a great film, a good breakdown. But, as always, style is sold separately.
