Conflict in the Middle East continues to rage, as military strikes from the United States and Israel drop on Iran, and counter-attacks are launched as well.
And one strike – or, at least, shrapnel from one – hit a surf park in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Just a few days ago, sirens blared over the Surf Park TLV, a wave pool in the Israeli coastal town, surfers scrambled for shelter, and fragments from a bomb hit the lagoon. No injuries were reported. See the footage of the aftermath below.
The video shows a surfer preparing for a session in the pool, which opened a few years back, before sirens blast through the air. Then, calmly, all the surf park visitors take shelter. Afterwards, they assess the damage – a hunk of missile debris in the pool. That’s certainly not something you see every day, especially in the niche world of surfing.
So, we contacted Arthur Rashkovan, an Israeli surfer who helped bring the Tel Aviv wave pool to life, to hear about what happened. Here’s what he had to say:
“Actually, that day I wasn’t working at the pool. But story is that a shrapnel hit it and made a little dent at the pool floor very close to the entrance. The damage is minimal. The dent was already fixed and filled. Let’s describe it as a little harmless ding on the deck of a surfboard.
“The good thing we have these days is the pool is working and we can escape the madness for a little session. And the moment we get a warning sign, which is 5-6 minutes from the moment the missiles are in the zone, the lifeguard notifies the surfers and they sprint to shelter.
“The pool has three shelters, so there is no problem. We’re all well trained in this situation.
“We’re all good and safe and the pool will re-open its gates in the next few days.”
Pray for peace. No matter what side of the conflict you stand on.
