While the mist has settled from the historic, gigantic, 70-foot-plus waves of the TUDOR Nazaré Big Wave Challenge, it’s time to lookback at a few standout moments.

Specifically, Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca. The Brazilian big wave charger was on a heater during the event, along with tow partner Pedro Scooby. And in the end, he won the “Men’s Best Performance” award; but along the way, he suffered some serious wipeouts.

Not one, but two, of some of the heaviest beatdowns ever seen at the world’s biggest wave. Let’s take a look at the first one below.

Chumbo takes off on a behemoth. The wave offers a teepee peak for him to easily descend down the face, pull up from the bottom, then exit safely into the (nonexistent) channel at Nazaré. However, once he hits the trough, comes the froth. And Chumbo goes airborne, momentarily, before being bucked off his board and sent into oblivion.

“There’s not much he could’ve done to avoid that, to be honest,” the commentators note. “I mean, the water gets so turbulent once that whitewash from the previous wave is on the face, and once you hit that, it’s very, very easy to lose control.”

But that wasn’t all. On another wave, perhaps a bit smaller than the former, Chumbo faces a closeout section, and attempts to hit the eject button, diving through the face. But the force and power of Nazaré pulls him back, sucking him over the falls.

“That was a heavy moment for sure,” Chianca said. “It was one of the heaviest wipeouts of my life. I want to thank Sebastian Steudtner for picking me up right in front of the rocks, he saved my life today. The day started really gnarly, but we tried our best. Pedro ‘Scooby’ Vianna (BRA) put me on some bombs, and I put him on some bombs. Thanks to Nazaré for putting on a show and to WSL for making this happen.”

Heavy indeed. But heavy is the head that wears the crown, yes?

Congrats to all the winners – Nic Von Rupp and Clement Roseyro, Chumbo, and Justine Dupont – from the 2025 TUDOR Nazaré Big Wave Challenge.
