We try and avoid hyperbole whenever possible but it's hard not to think of the Red Bull team as the best big wave crew in the world. They recently did a trip to Ireland that may as well have been a surf camp on steroids--with sessions at Mullaghmore, Riley's and Aileen's. Yeah, that's the sort of thing you can do when you've got wings.

Although the entire Red Bull surf roster wasn't there, they gathered Nate Florence, Kai Lenny, Natxo Gonzalez, and Leo Fioravanti (to name a few) to join local legends Connor Maguire and Gearoid Mcdaid. For Kai and Leo, it was their first time at Mully in full swing. For Natxo, well, he got things going with a banger of a wave before the rest of the team even arrived...

The team was based in Sligo and acquainted with the lay of the land by Maguire so when a fresh pulse of swell popped up on the charts, Mr. Slab Tour and the crew took a chance to head south and to try and score the notoriously fickle Riley's. Heavy wipeouts and sublime visions of tight caverns and dark water ensued.

When the talent level of your crew reaches stratospheric levels, and your base camp is smack dab in the middle of one of the most steady big wave regions of the Northern Hemisphere, there's no doubt that there will be epic makes, gnarly fails, and everything in between.

Florence said, "These types of days, even if you don't get one, but your in the water seeing it and feeling the power of it, it's still a fun session. But all you really need is one, maybe."

In addition to chasing slabs, the crew payed homage to Irish culture by making a visit to the Guinness brewery where a mandatory pint was in order. Now, can you imagine what kind of stories fly around when you've amassed that sort of team over a pint? I reckon it played out like some sort of wild big wave war story session.
